What Is the Best Wood for Rustic Furniture?
“Best” is a subjective term. Because what’s best for you and your home might not be what your neighbor or a friend would want in their homes. And that’s a good thing! Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.
In this guide, we’ll break down popular wood species often used in rustic furniture, so you can make a better decision about which type best suits your style and budget.
Comparing Wood Species for Rustic Furniture
What kind of look do you want for your rustic furniture? Answering that question will guide your choice of wood best suited to achieve the style you want. Maybe you’re looking for the traditional knotty pine look of furniture you’d find in a mountain cabin. Or perhaps you want a distressed, “worn-in” look. Whatever you might have in mind, we can help. If you have questions, please call 570-231-5080 or contact us.
Most Popular Wood Species for Rustic Furniture
Hickory – Hickory is a popular choice for tables, beds, and most any type of furniture. It is ideal for tables and case goods because of its durability and fantastic wood grain. Hickory is the only wood species we sell where the bark stays intact on the furniture.
Aspen – This wood gets its character from the outdoor elements of Colorado. It is the most popular wood choice for bedroom sets. We get Aspen delivered to us from Colorado because we can’t get that character of wood here in Pennsylvania.
Rough Cut Oak – This wood gets its name from the visible saw blade marks that give it a natural, rustic look. Rough cut oak, like Hickory, works for any type of furniture. Its hardness and durability, as well as its appearance and texture, make it a great choice for tables. Unlike Hickory and Aspen, this style doesn’t include any logs which place it in the modern rustic category.
Black Walnut – Black walnut is an excellent choice for dining sets for its stunning grain and durability but is also used to build tv stands, coffee tables, and end tables. Most of our Walnut products are solid slabs used for dining tables and coffee tables.
We also sell a variety of other species such as Timber Frame (rough sawn pine), Red Cedar, & White Cedar which will be discussed in a future article.
